In this workshop we will learn the basics of traditional smocking using variety of classic stitch patterns and try out some contemporary, experimental variations in unusual materials and new stitches to create highly original textile art.
We will provide a full and detailed list of materials to bring that will include :
Fabric (size and type will be specified)
Embroidery needles (crewel needles)
Fabric markers, chalk, pens or pencils
Ruler or quilters grid
Polyester sewing thread for tacking
Threads, needles, pens, ruler etc.
Small amounts of materials and threads will also be available to sample and purchase.
Ruth Singer has been working as an artist-maker in textiles for 15 years. Prior to setting up her own studio practice, she worked in museums for several years following a Masters Degree in Museum Studies, before beginning her arts practice in 2005. Ruth continues to bring the two together with creative projects inspired by heritage. Her background as a textile historian and museum curator is woven throughout her work; she creates pieces with a sense of history and a look of antiques but with a powerful contemporary story.
