As you might expect from Cohana these pincushions are absolutely gorgeous and they come with 3 beautiful glass headed pins.

Based on the Japanese masu, or wooden measuring box, they have a 1,300-year history. Originally used as a measure for rice, masu boxes are now more commonly used to serve sake. They are a symbol of good luck and happiness.

Made from Cypress wood, these boxes are traditionally made by Ohashi Ryoki in Ogaki, Gifu prefecture and turned into pincushions. Dovetail joints are carefully cut and glued to securely hold the shape of the box.

The pincushion is made from Kokura textile, a cotton fabric produced in the Northern Kyushu region. It is known for its three-dimensional stripes with a rhythmic colour pattern created by the use of many warp threads. Kokura textile production ceased during World War II. However, after several decades, weaver Noriko Tsuiki revived Kokura textile into a thriving industry creating stylish-but-traditional cloth.

The glass headed pins were developed by Nail Salon Ai-rish and Kato Shippo Works to capture the beauty of traditional Aichi Shippo ware. Shippo is a type of cloisonne ware, or lacquered metalwork, and its name derives from the "seven treasures" of gold, silver, pearl, agate, crystal, coral, and lapis lazuli. Uniquely crafted "Shippo flakes" are incorporated into the glass head of the sewing pins.

The pincushion measures: 46 x 29 x 46 mm.

The pins measure: 35 x 0.5 mm. The glass head is 4 mm.
