Festive Hand Sewing is not about any specific holiday, but rather about the ancient human impulse to shine light into dark times.
From the author of the original Hand Sewing Clothing and the Hand Sewn Wardrobe, this zine is a spiral-bound, 54-page exploration of how we can use hand sewing to rebel against despair, infusing layers of added joy into pre-existing garments.
Beyond these philosophical underpinnings, the zine features 22 different real-deal sewing skills, including: making charming ball buttons out of nothing but fabric; drafting and sewing new collar shapes to replace the old ones; creating complex appliqués using English paper piecing methods; making fabric-corded designs; stitching beads onto garments; and more. Along the way, 11 different stitches are shared, as well as lots of invitations to embrace whimsy and imagination.
For millenia, in times of darkness, humans have gathered to sing, dance, feast, let off steam, and reflect whatever light can be found. Today, let’s use our hands to stitch the best parts of humanity – humor, tenderness, care, whimsy, curiosity, experimentation, problem-solving, and more. By sewing with defiant joy, we can invite the festive (the joyful, the rebellious, the nourishing, the communal) into our everyday acts of living.
This zine was written, illustrated, and formatted by Louisa Owen Sonstroem. It was printed by Gulemo, Inc., in Willimantic, Connecticut, USA.
First published December 2025.

I contacted Grace from Beyond Measures regarding Appletons crewel wools and she immediately responded to my query. She gave me all the informations I needed and took the time to list all the colours that were available. When I purchased, my parcel was dispatched on the same day! I am very happy with the service and quality of materials I have received.
Loved this introduction to Sashiko…I am totally hooked. No worries about the instructions being in Japanese ChatGPT translated perfectly. Response from the Beyond measure team were prompt and v helpful. One happy customer returning.
Excellent quality, being a well made hoop and a deeper frame it's so much better at holding the fabric taut
Always a joy to receive an order from Beyond Measure. Quick reliable service. Beautifully wrapped. I love Grace’s leather thimbles, just prefect for hand quilting. Definitely recommend Beyond Measure for all your creative needs. X
I love this stuff, it makes it so easy to transfer embroidery/ Sashiko patterns, I just trace the pattern then sew over the top and it washes away under a running tap.
